Islamic & Coptic Cairo | Sleeper Train to Aswan

Begin your day in Islamic Cairo, one of the most historically rich urban landscapes in the world. Walking through this district feels like stepping back in time, with centuries-old streets, mosques, and architectural treasures still remarkably intact. Along Al-Muizz Street, once the grand ceremonial avenue of the Fatimid capital, your guide brings the past to life through stories of rulers, scholars, and everyday life in medieval Cairo. A truly special moment comes as you gain access to hidden spaces not normally open to the public, quiet courtyards and historic interiors that reveal a more intimate side of the city. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional Egyptian breakfast in a local setting, offering a taste of authentic flavours and daily life.

Here, ancient churches and sacred sites reflect centuries of faith and coexistence, adding another rich layer to Cairo’s cultural identity. Following lunch, experience one of Cairo’s most timeless pleasures, a felucca sail on the Nile. As you drift along the river, watch daily life unfold on the banks, offering a peaceful contrast to the city’s energy. In the evening, transfer to the station and board your overnight sleeper train to Aswan. This nostalgic journey through Egypt’s landscapes is as much a part of the experience as the destinations themselves.

Day 4

Aswan & Nubian Village Experience

Wake as the train arrives in Aswan, where the pace immediately feels slower and more relaxed. Known for its scenic beauty and warm hospitality, Aswan offers a completely different atmosphere from Cairo.

Begin with a visit to the High Dam, a modern engineering achievement that transformed Egypt’s economy and created Lake Nasser. Continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, where you gain rare insight into ancient stone-carving techniques, seeing first-hand how these monumental structures were created. Next, visit the beautiful Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Set on an island and surrounded by water, it is widely considered one of Egypt’s most picturesque and atmospheric temples.

Later, transfer to a nearby Nubian village, where colourful homes, palm-lined paths, and a strong sense of community define the experience. This is not just a visit…it’s an opportunity to connect with a living culture that remains deeply rooted in tradition. In the late afternoon, enjoy a tranquil felucca sail around the Nile islands as the golden light softens the landscape… one of the most peaceful moments of the journey. Dinner this evening is at a local family-run restaurant, where the story behind the business adds depth and meaning to the experience.

5
Day 5

Optional Abu Simbel & Nile Cruise Embarkation

This morning offers the opportunity to visit Abu Simbel, one of Egypt’s most extraordinary sites. For those who choose to go, the journey itself, across vast desert landscapes, adds to the sense of adventure.

The temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, carved directly into rock, are monumental in both scale and significance. Their relocation to avoid flooding is one of the greatest archaeological rescue efforts ever undertaken.

Returning to Aswan, board your Nile cruise… your home for the next stage of the journey. Settle into your cabin and enjoy a slower pace of travel, where the journey becomes just as important as the destinations.

The afternoon is free to relax on deck or explore Aswan’s markets at your leisure.

6
Day 6

Kom Ombo, Edfu & Sailing the Nile

Today is centred around the timeless rhythm of the Nile. As you sail north, the scenery unfolds quietly, lush farmland, small villages, and daily life continuing much as it has for centuries.

Stop at Kom Ombo Temple, uniquely dedicated to two gods, reflecting the balance of ancient Egyptian beliefs. Continue to Edfu Temple, one of the best-preserved in Egypt, where intricate carvings vividly depict mythological stories and rituals.

Between visits, there is time to relax on board, take in the views, and enjoy the calm, unhurried nature of the river… a defining part of the experience.

7
Day 7

Luxor West Bank & East Bank

Arrive in Luxor, often described as the world’s greatest open-air museum.

Begin on the West Bank, where royal tombs are carved deep into desert cliffs, revealing detailed artwork and beliefs surrounding the afterlife. These are not just monuments — they are stories preserved in stone.

Continue to the great mortuary temples, including those built to honour powerful pharaohs, each reflecting ambition, legacy, and devotion.

In the afternoon, visit Karnak Temple, an immense complex built over generations, followed by Luxor Temple, which becomes particularly atmospheric as it is illuminated in the evening light.

8
Day 8

Luxor Free Time & Sleeper Train to Cairo

Enjoy a slower start to the day with time at leisure. You may choose to relax on board or explore further at your own pace.

For those seeking a deeper experience, an optional excursion to Dendera and Abydos offers access to some of Egypt’s most spiritually significant and beautifully preserved temples, often less crowded but incredibly rewarding.
