Glimpses of the journey

Your itinerary
A carefully paced journey with time to wander, taste and discover.
Welcome to Sri Lanka
“Ayubowan” welcome to Sri Lanka! On arrival at Colombo International Airport, you’ll be warmly met by your guide before travelling north to the wild landscapes surrounding Wilpattu National Park. As the road winds away from the city, the scenery becomes quieter and more remote, setting the tone for the journey ahead.
In the evening, you may choose to join a guided night walk with a resident naturalist in search of the elusive Grey Slender Loris. Moving quietly through forest trails, bamboo bridges and streams, you’ll learn about this rare nocturnal primate and the conservation efforts protecting its fragile habitat. Spotting one is never guaranteed – but that’s part of the magic.
Wilpattu National Park : Morning & Afternoon Safaris
Today is dedicated entirely to exploring Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest protected wilderness. Known for its unique “villus” natural rain-fed lakes scattered throughout dry-zone forest, Wilpattu offers a quieter, more atmospheric safari experience.
Morning and afternoon jeep safaris maximise your chances of spotting wildlife during peak activity times. The park is home to leopards, elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, crocodiles and deer, as well as a remarkable variety of birdlife and butterflies. Wildlife often gathers near the lakes in the early mornings and late afternoons, creating exceptional viewing and photographic opportunities.
Conservation in Action & Ancient Anuradhapura
Begin the day with a hands-on tree-planting experience, contributing directly to local reforestation and environmental conservation projects. This meaningful activity connects you with the land and highlights the importance of sustainable tourism in protecting Sri Lanka’s ecosystems.
Later, travel towards Habarana, stopping en route at the sacred city of Anuradhapura, one of the world’s great archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,500 years, Anuradhapura is home to colossal stupas, ancient monasteries and the sacred Bodhi Tree, grown from a cutting of the Buddha’s original tree of enlightenment.
Sigiriya Sunrise & Minneriya Elephant Safari
An early start brings one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic moments: the sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This UNESCO World Heritage Site rises dramatically above the jungle, combining ancient engineering with landscaped gardens, frescoes and commanding views across the plains below.
In the afternoon, enjoy a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, renowned for its large elephant populations. During the dry season, the famous “Gathering” sees hundreds of elephants congregating around the reservoir, one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Even outside this period, sightings are frequent and memorable.
Dambulla Cave Temples, Temple of the Tooth & Journey to Knuckles
Today blends culture and landscape as you travel towards the Knuckles Mountain Range. En route, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a vast UNESCO-listed complex housing over 150 Buddha statues and some of the most extensive ancient cave paintings in the world.
Later, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, which is one of Buddhism’s most revered pilgrimage sites, before continuing into the cooler highlands of Knuckles, where misty mountains and forested valleys dominate the scenery.
Knuckles Villages, Nature & Community Connection
Today offers one of the most meaningful experiences of the journey. Over the next 1 to 2 hours, you will hike through the foothills of the Knuckles Mountains to a remote rural village, passing terraced paddy fields, home gardens and traditional farming practices that have remained unchanged for generations.
You’ll learn about village life, local agriculture, spice cultivation, beekeeping and traditional conflict-resolution systems. Following your hike, take the time for a refreshing swim in the natural stream or waterfalls, where the clear water offers the perfect opportunity to relax. Then enjoy a home-cooked village lunch prepared with ingredients grown locally.
This community-based experience directly supports sustainable tourism initiatives, helping preserve traditions while providing income to rural communities.
Cultural Heritage, Tea Country & Haputale
Travel south towards Haputale, stopping en route at the beautifully carved Embekke Temple, renowned for its intricate wooden craftsmanship.
In the afternoon, enjoy an immersive tea estate experience, learning about the production of world-famous Ceylon tea. Walk through lush plantations, meet tea pluckers and sample freshly brewed teas while enjoying sweeping hill-country views.
Lipton’s Seat, Nine Arch Bridge & Udawalawe
After an early breakfast, you will visit Liptons Seat, located at the top of the hill of Poonagala. This is where Sir Thomas Lipton once surveyed his tea empire. You can either hike through the lush tea plantations or choose to drive in comfort with your guide.
Continue towards Udawalawe, stopping at the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, a striking colonial-era viaduct built entirely of stone, surrounded by jungle-clad hills and tea plantations.
Elephant Conservation & Udawalawe Safari
Begin the day at the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned baby elephants are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. This ethical conservation project focuses on minimal human interaction, allowing elephants to retain their natural behaviours.
Later, enjoy a safari in Udawalawe National Park, internationally recognised for its large elephant herds. The park’s open landscapes and permanent water sources make wildlife sightings frequent, with chances to see deer, buffalo, jackals and, on rare occasions, leopards.
Traditional Crafts & Galle Fort
This morning, immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s traditional craftsmanship with hands-on experiences in pottery and brass making. Guided by skilled artisans, you’ll learn ancient techniques and even create your own keepsake.
Later, travel to Ambalangoda, stopping at the historic Galle Fort. This UNESCO World Heritage Site blends European colonial architecture with South Asian influences, offering atmospheric streets, historic buildings and vibrant artisan shops.
Leisure on the South Coast
A full day at leisure to relax after a rich and rewarding journey. Enjoy the coastal setting, explore nearby towns or simply unwind, reflecting on the wildlife encounters and meaningful connections made along the way.
