Glimpses of the journey

Your itinerary
A carefully paced journey with time to wander, taste and discover.
Welcome to Ljubljana!
Arrive into Ljubljana, one of Europe’s most liveable and environmentally conscious capitals. Compact, elegant and effortlessly charming, the city blends Baroque façades, Art Nouveau buildings and striking modern architecture. After settling into your centrally located hotel, take a gentle stroll along the banks of the Ljubljanica River. The pedestrianised Old Town hums with relaxed café culture and quiet confidence, the perfect introduction to Slovenia’s laid-back rhythm. This evening, gather for a welcome dinner where you’ll meet your fellow travellers and tour manager, setting the tone for the week ahead.
History, River Life & Slovenian Cuisine
Begin with a guided exploration of Ljubljana’s Old Town. Visit Prešeren Square, cross the iconic Triple Bridge and admire the elegant Town Hall and Cathedral. Ride the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle, perched above the city, where panoramic views stretch towards the Alps. Here, you’ll uncover the capital’s medieval foundations and the events that shaped modern Slovenia. After free time for lunch, enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the Ljubljanica River. Floating beneath the city’s distinctive bridges offers a new perspective on Ljubljana’s architectural harmony. In the evening, step into Slovenian culinary culture with a hands-on cooking class. Guided by a local chef, prepare and enjoy traditional dishes while learning about regional ingredients, family recipes and food customs that reflect the country’s diverse influences.
Coastal Piran, Karst Heritage & Vipava Wines
Today, journey to Slovenia’s short but beautiful stretch of Adriatic coastline. Explore Piran, a Venetian-influenced seaside town of narrow alleyways, terracotta rooftops and sweeping sea views. Wander through Tartini Square and climb the old city walls for panoramic views across the Adriatic. Continue inland to Štanjel, a medieval Karst village built entirely in stone. Its winding lanes and terraced gardens reveal centuries of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance influence. Nearby, visit a traditional Karst producer for a tasting of locally cured prosciutto, air-dried using time-honoured regional methods. In the afternoon, travel to the Vipava Valley for a guided wine tasting with a local winemaker. Thanks to its unique microclimate, this valley produces distinctive varietals that remain relatively undiscovered outside Slovenia.
Return to Ljubljana. Evening at leisure.
Caves, Horses & Industrial Heritage
This morning, discover the extraordinary underground world of Postojna Cave. Travel by underground train deep into one of Europe’s most impressive karst cave systems, where vast chambers and dramatic formations create a surreal landscape. Learn about the cave’s geology and the mysterious olm, a rare amphibian endemic to the region. Continue to Lipica Stud Farm, founded in 1580 and home to the world-famous Lipizzaner horses. Explore the grounds and learn about the Habsburg legacy and centuries-old breeding traditions that shaped this elegant breed. In the afternoon, visit Idrija, a UNESCO-listed town once home to one of the world’s largest mercury mines. At Gewerkenegg Castle, discover the town’s dual heritage, industrial innovation and delicate lace-making artistry, offering a fascinating contrast of strength and intricacy.
Return to Ljubljana. Evening at leisure.
Velika Planina, Medieval Towns & Arrival in Bled
Venture into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to explore Velika Planina, one of Europe’s few preserved shepherds’ settlements. After a scenic cable car and chairlift ascent, arrive at a high alpine plateau scattered with traditional wooden huts. With a local guide, visit the Preskar Museum and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, gaining insight into the pastoral lifestyle that still thrives here. Enjoy a live cheese-making demonstration followed by a tasting of fresh dairy products, then sit down for a rustic mountain lunch surrounded by alpine views. Descending from the plateau, stop in Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s best-preserved medieval towns. Its colourful façades and historic bridges tell stories of bishops, craftsmen and trade routes.
Continue to Bled and check into your lakeside hotel. Evening at leisure.
Lake Bled, Beekeeping Traditions & Farewell Dinner
Today is devoted to Lake Bled, Slovenia’s most iconic setting. Visit Bled Castle, dramatically positioned on a cliff overlooking the lake and the Julian Alps. Explore the museum and enjoy spectacular views across the water. Board a traditional wooden pletna boat and glide to Bled Island. Visit the Church of the Assumption and ring the wishing bell, a centuries-old tradition steeped in legend. In the afternoon, meet a local beekeeper to discover Slovenia’s proud apicultural heritage. During a guided honey tasting, learn about the importance of the native Carniolan bee and the role beekeeping plays in national identity and environmental preservation. This evening, celebrate your journey with a farewell dinner in Bled, featuring regional flavours and, when available, traditional folk music, a warm and memorable conclusion to your Slovenian cultural exploration.
