Glimpses of the journey

Your itinerary
A carefully paced journey with time to wander, taste and discover.
Welcome to Tropical Paradise!
Your adventure begins with a warm Sri Lankan welcome on arrival at Colombo International Airport. Meeting your guide, you’ll head north towards Sigiriya, watching the scenery shift from city life to open countryside. Once settled, the rest of the day is yours to relax, unwind and prepare for the experiences ahead.
Sunrise at Pidurangala & Ancient Polonnaruwa
Early in the morning, you will set out to climb Pidurangala Rock, reaching the summit in time for sunrise. This two-hour experience offers breathtaking panoramic views across the surrounding jungle, with the dramatic Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising from the landscape below. Along the way, you’ll pass through an ancient cave monastery and see one of Sri Lanka’s oldest reclining Buddha statues.
Later, explore the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa by bicycle, one of the most atmospheric ways to experience this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins are remarkably well preserved, allowing you to cycle between royal palaces, vast stupas and the impressive Gal Vihara, where colossal Buddha statues have been carved from a single granite rock.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Gal Oya Boat Safari
An early start brings one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic experiences: the ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World, this UNESCO-listed site combines natural drama with ancient engineering. Climb past water gardens, the Mirror Wall and colourful frescoes before reaching the summit, where sweeping views extend across the jungle and plains below.
In the afternoon, travel east to the remote Gal Oya region. Unlike many national parks, Gal Oya offers a rare boat safari experience. Gliding across the vast Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, you may see elephants swimming between islands, along with crocodiles, deer and abundant birdlife. This lesser-visited park offers a quieter, more immersive wildlife experience.
Monkey Mountain Trek & Kandyan Cultural Show
Begin the day with a guided trek to Monkey Mountain within Gal Oya National Park. The trail winds through forest and rocky terrain, offering opportunities to spot monkeys, colourful birds and other wildlife along the way. At the summit, enjoy 360-degree views across untouched wilderness and Sri Lanka’s largest reservoir, an unforgettable perspective on the island’s natural beauty.
Later, travel into the central hill country. In the evening, attend a traditional Kandyan dance performance, featuring energetic drumming, vibrant costumes and dramatic fire-walking. This lively cultural experience offers insight into one of Sri Lanka’s proudest artistic traditions.
Pekoe Trails: Tea Plantations & Highland Villages
Today you explore Sri Lanka’s hill country on foot, hiking Stage One of the renowned Pekoe Trails from Hanthana to Galaha Junction. This 12.8 km route takes you through tea plantations, forested paths, rural villages and scenic viewpoints, showcasing the diversity of the central highlands.
Rated easy to moderate, the trail is rewarding without being overly demanding. Along the way, you’ll encounter local communities and gain insight into life in the tea-growing regions. After the walk, your guide will meet you and transfer you back to your accommodation, with the remainder of the day at leisure.
Kitulgala & White Water Rafting
Travel to Kitulgala, a lush riverside town surrounded by rainforest and known as Sri Lanka’s adventure capital. In the afternoon, take to the Kelani River for an exciting white-water rafting experience. The rafting route covers approximately 6.5 kilometres, featuring five major rapids and several smaller ones, all navigated with professional guides and full safety equipment.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, flat-water rafting is also available, allowing you to enjoy the rainforest scenery at a gentler pace.
Rainforest Trek, River Crossing & Scenic Train Journey
This morning, venture into the Makandawa Forest Reserve, one of Sri Lanka’s richest and most untouched rainforests. Accessed by crossing the Kelani River in a traditional dugout canoe, the trek takes you through dense jungle once used as a filming location for The Bridge on the River Kwai .
The forest is home to rare endemic species, beautiful waterfalls and crystal-clear rock pools where you can swim. Birdlife is exceptional, with the chance to spot species such as Sri Lanka Blue Magpies, Hanging Parrots and colourful babblers.
Later, travel towards Ella, combining road and rail. Enjoy part of Sri Lanka’s iconic hill-country train journey, officially recognised as one of the world’s most scenic rail routes, passing rolling tea estates, mist-covered hills and deep valleys.
Nine Arch Bridge, Upper Diyaluma Falls & Yala
Start the day at the famous Nine Arch Bridge, a striking colonial era viaduct built entirely of stone and cement. Surrounded by jungle and tea plantations, it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed landmarks.
Continue south to Upper Diyaluma Falls, the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. A rewarding hike leads you past cascading streams and natural pools to the top, where you can swim in rock pools perched dramatically at the edge of the cliff, with sweeping views across the landscape.
In the afternoon, arrive near Yala National Park, ready for an early safari the following morning.
Yala National Park Safari & Galle Fort
An early morning safari in Yala National Park offers one of the best opportunities in Asia to spot leopards in the wild. The park is also home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer and a remarkable variety of birdlife. Safaris are conducted in quieter park zones to ensure a more responsible and enjoyable wildlife experience.
Later, travel to the south coast, stopping at Galle Fort. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases a fascinating blend of European architecture and South Asian influences, with atmospheric streets, historic buildings and boutique shops within its fortified walls.
Leisure on Sri Lanka’s South Coast
After days of adventure and exploration, today is entirely at leisure. Relax on the beach, enjoy the laid-back coastal atmosphere, explore nearby villages or simply unwind and reflect on the journey. It’s the perfect contrast to the active days that came before.
